Trimethylolpropane (CAS NO.77-99-6)Product Overview

Product Description

Trimethylolpropane (TMP, 2-Ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol, CAS 77–99–6) is a non-toxic, trifunctional primary polyol with three reactive hydroxyl groups. It appears as a white crystalline solid at room temperature (melting point ≈ 58–61 °C) and is widely used as a building block in the synthesis of alkyd resins, polyurethane (PU) dispersions, high-solid coatings, synthetic lubricants (trimethylolpropane esters), and radiation-curable monomers. Its trifunctional structure provides excellent crosslinking density, leading to final products with superior hardness, chemical resistance, and weatherability.

Advantages – Why choose our TMP

Higher functionality than(diols):

Three primary OH groups provide efficient branching and crosslinking at lower loading.

Better weatherability than pentaerythritol in alkyds:

TMP-based alkyd resins show improved gloss retention and flexibility without sacrificing hardness.

Low volatility and good thermal stability:

Suitable for high-temperature curing systems (e.g., coil coatings, powder coatings).

Custom physical form:

Available as flake or powder for easy handling and weighing.

Benefits – What the customer gains

For coating manufacturers (industrial, automotive, wood):

TMP improves hardness, stain resistance, and outdoor durability of polyester and PU coatings → longer product life and reduced repainting frequency.

01

For alkyd resin producers

TMP delivers high molecular weight resins with lower viscosity, allowing high-solids formulations that comply with VOC regulations → easier application and regulatory compliance.

02

For synthetic lubricant formulators (ISO VG 46, 68 etc.):

TMP esters offer high viscosity index (VI > 140) and low pour point → better energy efficiency and extended oil drain intervals.

03

For UV-curable monomer makers:

TMP triacrylate (TMPTA) provides fast cure response and excellent adhesion to plastics/metals → higher throughput and stronger bond strength.

04

Evidence

  • COA (Certificate of Analysis) provided with each batch, including GC chromatogram and hydroxyl value test report.
  • 24-month stability study under dry, cool storage (below 35 °C) shows purity loss < 0.2 % and no significant acid value drift.
  • Customer case: A Turkish coating producer replaced pentaerythritol with our TMP in their coil coating formulation and improved reverse impact resistance from 40 to 60 in-lb without losing pencil hardness (2H).
  • Logistics proof: We export an average of 500 tons of TMP monthly to clients in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, with < 0.3 % quality-related complaints over 24 months.
